Mississauga, ON – February 21, 2025 – As the global shift toward a low-carbon economy accelerates, Canada is investing in workforce development to meet the growing demand for green jobs. The Government of Canada has announced a $75 million investment through the Sustainable Jobs Training Fund, supporting eight projects aimed at equipping over 10,000 Canadian workers with essential skills in electric vehicle (EV) maintenance, green building renovations, low-carbon energy, and carbon management.
Government Commitment to a Sustainable Workforce
The announcement was made by Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, at Achēv, a workforce development organization based in Mississauga. These training programs will ensure workers are prepared for emerging opportunities in sustainable industries, helping Canada transition to a net-zero economy while remaining economically competitive.
“Canada needs skilled workers to drive our economy forward. These projects demonstrate our commitment to fostering sustainable economic growth while creating meaningful employment opportunities,” said Minister MacKinnon.
The investment aligns with Canada’s Sustainable Jobs Plan (2023-2025), designed to strengthen key industries such as automotive, construction, and renewable energy.
Powering the Future with Green Skills
One of the key partners in this initiative is Achēv, which is collaborating with over 500 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and organizations.
Together, they will train over 1,000 individuals in the electric vehicle sector, which is experiencing rapid growth and contributes billions to Canada’s economy.
“As demand for electric vehicles increases, equipping our workforce with the right skills is critical for maintaining Canada’s competitive edge,” said Achēv CEO Tonie Chaltas.
Boosting Canada’s Green Economy
This investment supports the government’s broader mission to drive innovation, strengthen workforce skills, and position Canada as a global leader in sustainable industries. By funding these training programs, Canada ensures its workers are ready for future jobs while promoting economic growth and environmental sustainability.
With sustainable, well-paying jobs at the heart of this initiative, the government is laying the foundation for a stronger, greener future for Canadian workers.
