In March 2025, Canada announced a major clarification regarding the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility. This is fantastic news for international students seeking to build a future in one of the world’s most immigrant-friendly countries.
What’s New with the PGWP?
In recent months, many students were confused by mixed messages around their eligibility for the PGWP—especially those enrolled in private colleges with public partnerships or online/blended programs.
Canada’s immigration authority (IRCC) has now resolved those concerns with clear guidelines:
- Only graduates from eligible Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) can apply.
- Public colleges and universities remain fully eligible.
- Graduates of select private institutions with a recognized public-private partnership may also qualify.
- Students who completed more than 50% of their program online due to COVID-19 before September 1, 2024, will still be eligible.
Why Is the PGWP Important?
The PGWP allows international students to work in Canada for up to 3 years after graduation. This not only helps graduates gain valuable work experience but also paves the way to permanent residency through pathways like Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).
